THE CHALLENGE
This project involved fitout and services works for the Department of Medicine located on the third floor of the Main Building at North Shore Hospital. Access was extremely limited with a goods lift for deliveries only available to be used for a few hours per day and laydown delivery areas severely limited. Access from the lifts transitioned across live lobby with patients, staff and the public; in addition, there were constraints on construction noise that had to be managed with the construction works immediately over a maternity ward.
The key to the success of the project delivery was planning. Pre planning of all deliveries and load out was required so as the Goods Lifts could be utilized to full capacity in its available hours for loading in materials and rubbish out. This also required supervision, spotters and cleaners to be available to manage the process. Pre – planning also allowed the Disruption Notices to be lodged with the WDHB in sufficient time to manage noise and any services disconnections required to carry out the works.
A defect free handover was key as access post handover is difficult.
Located in the middle of a live operating environment, with heavily restricted access and sharing all facilities with another main contractor, RCC were accommodating, proactive and most importantly, personable. The project was completed on time, with little fuss, to the satisfaction of the WDHB. I would have no hesitation in working with the RCC team again.
