The Gym was built as part of the continuing expansion plan at St Marys College.
Not only a Gym but a multi-functional building having 5 new classrooms included in the design. The Gym was also designed to be a fully functional area of congregation where the school can hold their weekly assembly and other functions, with the design including for a stage and large storage areas.
Built of precast panels that were honed both inside and out giving a very modern appearance and also making it very robust.
Despite difficulties with a very wet winter the project was completed to the agreed time, and has added a great deal of value to the school, and its operation.
The project won the Education category at the 2014 NZ Property Council Awards
The design provided for Monarc Concrete panels with the polished faces often on both sides and edges in places. This was the finished surfaces so checking of shop drawings, care during construction and protection of the panels were paramount.
Shop drawings were prepared by Nauhria Precast and checked by RCG and RCC Education to ensure compliance with the design intent of the Architects. The panel construction methodology was developed to wherever possible avoid exposed lifting points that would require patching after erection of the panels.
Panels were protected after installation where they were exposed to potential damage ie around ground level and adjacent finishes. The award winning building is a testament to the design philosophy of RCG and the delivery of the construction by RCC Education.
